Frequently asked questions

  • How many sessions would I need?
Generally speaking you should start seeing improvements anywhere between 4-6 sessions, slightly more sessions will be needed for gynaecological issues or fertility as you will be working around the menstrual cycle. However, the body enjoys routine and regularity and everyone has their own healing path so the total number of treatments may vary from person to person. Your treatment plan will be individual to you. Some people enjoy coming in once a month / bi-monthly for “maintenance” acupuncture/tui na once they feel they are on the road to wellness.
  • What should I expect from my first acupuncture appointment?
Ahead of your first treatment you will be emailed a client intake and consent form which you will be asked to complete and return prior to your session. On arrival we will discuss the intake form and any other medical history not already covered and a treatment plan will be devised. Your tongue and pulse will be checked before being asked to lie on the treatment couch ready for your treatment.
  • What do I wear?
Please wear loose fitting and comfy clothing. For the majority of your treatment you will remain fully clothed only exposing areas which need treating. For Tui Na a brushed cotton sheet will be placed over you and treatment will take place through this and your clothes.
  • Will my insurance company cover the cost of treatment?
Yes. Most private healthcare providers approve treatment with British Acupuncture Council members. Please check with your insurance company first if you wish to claim the cost of your treatments, as some require a GP referral in advance. An invoice can be supplied on request to support your claim.
  • Can I have acupuncture if pregnant?
Yes! Both you and your baby can enjoy acupuncture and tui na throughout pregnancy and after into the “fourth” trimester – helping with symptoms from morning sickness, nausea and fatigue. Research has shown that acupuncture from 36/37 weeks onwards can help shorten the length of delivery, and is actually how I found out all about the wonders of acupuncture when I was due with my second child. Moxa can also be used to help encourage breech babies to turn ready for delivery.
  • What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture and Tui Na can treat a variety of ailments such as musco-skeletal pain, digestive health, female health, mental health, fertility and pregnancy (although this list is by no means exhaustive). Our bodies are made up of the physical, emotional and spiritual and acupuncture and tui na work on all aspects of you, it might be a long forgotten trauma or suppressed grief which is being held in the body and is manifesting itself as a physical ailment. Acupuncture can help address this and help the body gently heal itself.
